Society of Children’s

Book Writers and Illustrators

Their Mission

The Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization, is one of the largest existing organizations for writers and illustrators. It is the only professional organization specifically for those individuals writing and illustrating for children and young adults in the fields of children’s literature, magazines, film, television, and multimedia.  Our mission is to support the creation and availability of quality children’s books around the world. We accomplish this by fostering a vibrant community of individuals who bring books for young readers to the public including writers, illustrators, translators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, booksellers, bloggers, enthusiasts and others. We provide education and support for these individuals  and the community through our awards, grants, programs and events. We strive to increase the quality and quantity of children’s books in the marketplace, and act as a consolidated voice for writers and illustrators of children’s books worldwide.

Dear Potential Readers,

“…and do you know what happened?”

“Her head fell off.”

Broken toys happen. They are a part of childhood, but what is a child to do when it’s their favorite toy? Well fix it of course. This story is about Lucy, a little girl who loves to play outside do crafts and play make believe. Lucy and her lifelong companion Annabelle, a rag doll, have been on many adventures that have left Annabelle very patched up. Regardless of wear Lucy loves Annabelle unconditionally. One day Annabelle loses her head while the two are playing one of their favorite games. This story shares the ups and downs and adventures these two experience together. Determination, frustration, pride, and knowing when to ask for help are all present it this edgy, sometimes dark story about a little girl and her best friend.

This story has the potential to meet multiple audiences, with its deadpan humor, stand out illustrations and the adorable message of friendship and unconditional love. Social-emotional curriculum users will find this story useful beyond the “If You’re Happy and You Know It” mainstream teaching. Both Lucy and Annabelle display a wide range of facial expressions that can spark many conversations about feelings and emotions. Parents will find the message useful and the story entertaining. One reader stated “Children can relate to the story,” while another reader said, “This book inspires children to use their imagination.”
